You never know what will inspire your next idea. To that end, I recommend people read different news feeds, tune into different radio stations and podcasts, and explore a variety of websites. After the morning chores, I sat down for a few minutes, turned on the television, and resisted the urge to take a nap. A show on RFDTV called Noble Outfitters was highlighting Karen with www.pieadaygiveaway.com . What a fascinating story.
This time of year as we are considering charitable donations, and especially food pantry donations, it was too much fun to learn about Karen’s project to not only bake, but also deliver a pie a day for 365 days to all kinds of people. Her recipients sometimes are celebrating an accomplishment, are suffering through an illness, and have recently given birth. She even delivered three pies to a high school geometry class on Happy Pi Day which is apparently in March. I’m just finding out about Karen’s adventures, and reading her stories, but couldn’t wait to share with you.
Delivering food to those in need is a wonderful way to help. But, Karen’s approach is a fun twist. Giving pies to others delivers not only nourishment, but also has to bring a smile along the way. Who doesn’t love pie? It reminds me of the movie, Michael with John Travolta and Andie MacDowell. Here’s Andie MacDowell singing her song about pie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9rgh8MCpe8 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXG3l4FdviU Warning—very corny!
I remember how grateful my sister was when her community cooked dinner for her and her children for several months after the death of her son. It was the type present that can only be received and repaid through service to others. To this day I wonder if the people who took the time (and money) to shop, prepare and deliver all those meals know what a difference they made.
As for Karen and her pies, I’m not sure Karen is sharing recipes, but she is sharing love. In our house we say recipes are only for inspiration. Every time we joke about that, I’ll be thinking of Karen’s inspirational giving through pastries.
Let me know how Karen inspires you as she gives back one pie at a time. And, just for fun, what’s your favorite pie? Pumpkin Pie? Apple Pie? Cherry Pie? Chocolate Pie? Maybe it’s Pizza Pie? I don’t know if I’m getting happier or fattier thinking about pie. At least this post is calorie free!
