8 Numbers Shine a Light on Reading

Jacob M. Braude defined a “big gun” as “frequently an individual of small caliber and immense bore.” Well, at the risk of sounding like a big bore, I’ve gathered a few statistics about reading that you might find memorable:

  • While 15% of the U.S. population is dyslexic, 50% of NASA employees are dyslexic. Statistic Brain 2016 (I’d love to know if this is really true!)
  • 56% of young people claim to read more than 10 books a year. Statistic Brain 2016
  • 15% of U.S. inmates are literate. Statistic Brain 2016
  • 12% of Americans listen to at least one audio book each year, Pew Research 2015
  • 72% of American adults read a book, or partial book, in any format in 2015, down from 79% in 2011. Pew Research 2015
  • The Qur’an with 50 translations and 198 editions has three billion plus copies in print. lovereading.co.uk
  • The King James Bible with 66 translations and 1,193 editions has over 2.5 billion copies in print. lovereading.co.uk
  • Harry Potter with 67 translations and 298 editions has over 450 million copies sold. lovereading.co.uk
