No matter that we’re in the decade of the 2020s, rodeos are still a part of Texas. Today, just for fun, I want to share a tiny bit about a Texas rodeo not involving any four-legged creatures, but instead four clackety old typewriters and their riders (or is that writers?).
A few years ago, I came across a book, Typewriter Rodeo—Real people, real stories, custom poems. Curiosity leapt across my computer screen as I internet scampered to grab a copy and waited for its arrival. Yes, most books to me still require paper.
Four people from Austin Texas have made an idea a reality. They “perform” at events. Their props are a 1970 Litton Imperial typewriter in aqua, A 1941 Royal Quiet DeLuxe (although I doubt it’s really quiet), a 1950s Oliver portable and a 1928 pop-up Remington. My first unanswered question is how do you find parts and work on these relics? But, I digress.
The book is wonderfully laid out and clever. The poems—well they are written on the spot for individuals at an event. Instead of caricature drawings or photos, this writing team captures a moment of time for an individual who provides them a word or phrase. The authors gaze into their eyes, engage them in a brief conversation and lickety split, clickety clack a poem is born. Is it prize winning poetry? Of course not. That’s not the point. What a way to connect with someone and create a long-lasting memory.
Are you curious now too? Check them out at Typewriter Rodeo Website
The book still adorns my shelf and I understand they have a new one about pets as well. What an interesting team!
Check ‘em out. It’s safer than a buckin’ bronco or a fast and furious barrel race.
Signing off from Texas.
Happy Trails!

P.S. When purchasing the book, please note you’ll discover some profanity on the pages.
